This seemingly put the kibosh on any future sequels, at least until interest in the property kicks back up. Later in her conversation with NME , Mackenzie Davis went on to explain how box office performance for Terminator: Dark Fate ended up affecting its future. And furthermore, how the financial side of the movie industry ultimately dictates which projects get made. As she put it,.
We should be investing in them right now. While Mackenzie Davis was able to join the Terminator franchise and kick major ass in Dark Fate , even she doesn't believe that now is the right time for another sequel to hit theaters. Instead, the 33 year-old actress is hoping that more space is created for new and exciting movies, rather than a continuation of old blockbusters.
But if Mackenzie Davis' comments are any indication, it might be a long time before the war against the machines continues on. One of the biggest selling points was the return of Sarah Connor herself, the incomparable Linda Hamilton, as she reunited with Arnold Schwarzenegger 's T on-screen for the first time since T2: Judgement Day. And with the film being led by the brilliant Mackenzie Davis as brutal human-machine hybrid Grace, all the ingredients were there for Dark Fate to succeed.
The direct sequel to T2 ignored all the films from the last 20 years, forging a new path involving a completely different robotic threat to Skynet called Legion. Same threat, different name, sure. But by the time the credits rolled, Dark Fate had backed itself into a strange corner after killing off both Grace and Schwarzenegger's domesticated T Davis was meant to return in future sequels as Grace, but it would be a new version of the character raised by both Sarah Connor and future resistance leader Dani.
During Davis' late appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, she revealed how her robot-killing hybrid machine was originally set to return in the planned sequels. Written by Joseph Baxter. Read more from Joseph Baxter. The future has changed. At least, it looks bright in terms of story and narrative possibilities for the future. Audiences may be skeptical of a new installment after being burned by Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines , Terminator Salvation and Terminator Genisys Much like Star Wars: The Force Awakens , Creed and Halloween , Dark Fate is a legacy sequel that feels like a recalibration of the franchise, a reconsideration of what Terminator is as a property in a way that recognizes the best parts of the past while forging ahead.
Ignoring the previous entries post- T2 , Dark Fate presents itself as the true Terminator 3 and opens with a major plot point that shifts the story in a new direction. While the theatrical window for this Terminator series may be over, perhaps the franchise can find favor with audiences and continue on through a streaming series. Distributor Netflix already has a deal with Paramount, and seeing the continuing adventures of Dani Ramos Natalia Reyes and Sarah Connor Linda Hamilton play out in that format may be worth exploring.
As Sarah Connor puts it, he was killed by a future that no longer exists. On the run from a new breed of Terminator, Rev-9 Gabriel Luna , Dani finds herself under the protection of an augmented human soldier from the future, Grace Mackenzie Davis , and a battle-hardened present-day Sarah Connor, who sees her younger self in Dani.
