Keane toured the East Sussex circuit for several years while internalizing the epic sounds of their set list, which included songs by Oasis , U2 , and the Beatles. The quartet began performing original material in , although Chaplin left for Edinburgh University shortly thereafter to study art history.
The move proved to be brief, as he returned to London in and doubled his efforts with Keane. Buoyed by Chaplin 's tenor vocals and Rice-Oxley 's inventive keyboard effects, the group made its studio debut in with a self-released single, "Call Me What You Like.
Keane continued performing as a trio and happened upon their big break in December , when Fierce Panda Records representative Simon Williams who had helped discover Coldplay several years prior was summoned by a friend to attend a Keane gig in London. Williams was impressed with the band's performance and offered to issue Keane 's next single, "Everybody's Changing," on the spot. The limited-edition release became a success on U. Keane signed with Island in and released "This Is the Last Time," the band's final single for the Fierce Panda label, before the year was up.
They made their major-label debut one year later with Hopes and Fears , which hit the top of the U. The album went on to become the second highest-selling record of the year in the U. By the end of the decade, it was recognized as the ninth best-selling album of the s in the U.

From a production point of view, we just went into the studio wanting to be pushed by our producer, David Kosten, and to not sound like you would expect the next Keane record to sound, or to not sit back and do the things we would have done before. Although I think there is quite a lot of pop influences in some of the new songs. But there were so many problems with trying to decide that it became 11, "and then the others insisted Day Will Come had to be on there".
Clearly the rows are still ongoing, albeit in good humour. Chaplin does concede he is happy with the final tracklisting and believes it is the "best set of songs" Keane have ever released. But while they are aiming to be more on top of things this time round, the band say they have no master plan for more success or any desire to build up Keane as a brand.
Keane's anger at Tory use of song. Keane steam to UK chart triumph. Keane answer their music critics. Keane are a four-piece now that Jesse Quin r has joined the band full time. So how would he describe being in Keane?
