I always prefer to use as a base a little place, full of character. So, we travelled each day back and forth to Vianden discovering different parts of Luxembourg. On the map below you can see the places we visited during our 4-day long weekend in Luxembourg.
Of course, you can completely customize this Luxembourg itinerary and fit it into 3 days or even in a weekend. Vianden is a small town on the River Our with an impressive medieval castle perched on one of the hills. The town was established in the 13 c.
It used to be one of those fortified medieval towns. Nowadays, there are the remains of the ramparts which encircled the city, guarding it with its 24 towers and allowing visitors in only through one of the five city gates. Take the time to walk along the town walls. On this second day of our trip, being also my birthday, we headed to Luxembourg City, the capital of the Grand Duchy. Well, Luxembourg is much more than this.
Walk down the Chemin de la Corniche and admire the fabulous views along its whole length. Grund is the lower town, caught between the steep cliffs in the loop of the river Alzette.
The casemates are an intricate maze of rock tunnels, used for the defense of the city against invaders. Luxembourg turned out to be a city with strict eating habits. This is the time when you HAVE to order lunch. Otherwise, you will miss your chance to have anything decent to eat all the way until the evening hours when dinner is served. So, plan well in advance your lunch time. Early in the morning on the 3rd day we headed to the castle of Vianden.
I suggest that you take the chairlift which will take you up the hill and then walk to the castle. It took years to build the castle between the 11th and 15th century.
In the Dutch king William I sold it to a local merchant who dismantled it and sold it off in pieces. The locals got mad with Willem I and he had to buy again the castle.
The castle was finally restored to its glory in the s, when it became property of the Government of Luxembourg. I love chasing castles and each time I visit a place there is at least one castle on my list. This one was very well restored and had this amazing views and visiting it was definitely one of my favorite things to do in Luxembourg. In the afternoon we went to Echternach — the oldest town in Luxembourg , just at the border with Germany. On our last day in Luxembourg, on the way home, we stopped for a short visit in Clervaux — another small charming city in the north of the country, dominated by its Abbey, the Church of Saint Cosma and Damian and the white castle.
If you are in Clervaux, do not miss The Family of Man — a permanent photographic exhibition in the castle. It is an absolutely stunning collection! I was totally taken away. Visiting the exhibition should be on your list of things to do in Luxembourg. During our 4-day trip to Luxembourg we stayed in Hotel Petry in Vianden and travelled around. We loved this charming family hotel! The restaurant had a large terrace, which was perfect in the summer. We could also use the swimming pool and the spa of Hotel Belle-Vue only m from Hotel Petry at no extra charge.

Pei, many describe it as an architectural masterpiece. It holds an interesting contemporary art collection.
Some describe the exterior as looking similar to an instrument. It presents many events, concerts and shows. Sit outside and enjoy the stunning view whilst sipping on a warming cup of hot chocolate. It is a war memorial built to commemorate all the Luxembourgish soldiers who fought in the World Wars.
This statue has an interesting history, having been knocked down by the Nazis in , it disappeared for decades then was rediscovered and restored in Sit at the monument, read about its long, eventful history whilst taking in the pretty sunset over the town. Now back to the hotel to freshen up and get ready for dinner.
From here, make your way to Updown Bar. Enjoy a pint of beer here then head to Liquid Bar just over the Alzette and treat yourself to a refreshing cocktail. It has a fun lively atmosphere attracting many young people. Open late on weekends and with the DJ playing well known songs that everyone can enjoy, you are guaranteed a great night here! Once a year, go somewhere you have never been before. The perfect setting for that slightly lazy Sunday morning.
On our journey back into the city center, stop by the Passerelle about 17 minutes to walk from Bouneweger Stuff. Once we get back to the center, this is a good time to start the Wenzel Circular Walk ; A tour of the city, stopping at all the most beautiful and famous spots. If you wish to have a guided tour, you can book this online or from any Tourist Office.
Otherwise, you can do a self-guided trail. First stop on the tour is the Casements du Bock which is made up of a 17km maze of stone tunnel. These interesting tunnels were carved from They then operated as a bomb shelter during the Second World War. Bock Rock provided a great spot to rest, as it is raised above the ground and so impenetrable and surrounded by the Alzette River. Throughout time, walls appeared along the stone and then as the city expanded, more walls emerged. Explore the Casemates: These underground tunnels and caves were built in and could accommodate tens of thousands of people, equipment, food, horses, workshops, kitchens and other important aspects of the city.
What a perfect place to watch the sun go down. Next, cross over to see the Rham Plateau and the Wenzel wall. The wall is at least meters long, including 37 towers and 15 gates. It was built so high, in a raised position to defend the residents of the valley. This is an interesting place to have a wander, taking in all of its glorious history. Another stunning view where you can see the wall and the junction of the Upper Town and Rham Plateau.
From the end of the Chemin de la Corniche , there is a public lift which will take you down to the Grund where you will find many shops and restaurants. Now head up to the Grand-Rue and find Patisserie Oberweis for an excellent array of baked goods. From sandwiches to cakes and pastries, this family run bakery is the perfect place to end our wonderful weekend trip and have a snack before the long journey home. From Oberweis , grab your luggage and head to the airport.

It was a disappointment and we honestly wondered if we were wasting our time in Luxembourg. That is, until we left the old town and strolled the walls and casemates.
This, we loved. In the end, we enjoyed our time here, but if you only have one day to spend in Luxembourg, you might want to avoid Easter Monday and the other big holidays.

We chose to park in the city center so we could then walk directly to everything else. If we parked in a suburb, we would then have to figure out public transportation, or take a taxi, so it was easier to park in the city center. There are a lot of parking garages.

Plz tell how can we find you? How do u suggest traveling from Paris to lexembourg and from there to Brussels in an economical way. The train is great. Last spring we rode the high speed train from Paris to Luxembourg City for 25 euros a person. You may be able to get even cheaper fares if you do not take the high speed train.
There are also trains that run between Luxembourg and Brussels. My wife and I took the train from Paris to Luxembourg and then to Brussels. Fast, comparatively inexpensive, and not crowded.
