If you want to extend your stay on the island, La Bastide des Anges provides a farmhouse setting in which to get to know the island more intimately. One of the best ways to kill a few hours is to stroll the streets without an agenda and see what treasures you unveil. Duck into lanes to find hidden galleries, walk through ancient stone archways to discover sheltered gardens and climb stone stairs for the best views over the city.
Deep within the city walls is a pedestrian area where ambling takes on an even more leisurely manner. Provence is famous for its markets and perhaps the lifestyle they represent and Avignon is home to one of the most famous markets in the region.
The somewhat industrial-looking building that houses the iconic Avignon market belies the delightful scenes that meet you within. The indoor market is brimming with local delights — ranging from delicately prepared pastries right through to produce still speckled with the dirt it was plucked from hours before.
Much more than a market, Les Halles is a meeting point, a one-stop-shop, and as some might say, the heart of the community. Particularly on Saturday mornings when local chefs give live demonstrations of their expertise. In an otherwise level city, the raised Rocher des Doms gardens offer a fresh perspective and a unique vantage point. Despite its elevated position, the treescape of Rocher des Doms provides a welcome respite from the sun, or protection from the mightiest of mistral winds.
This makes it suitable for visiting all year round. To get there, take the stairs from the Boulevard de la Ligne or from behind the palace on Rue des Escaliers Sainte-Anne, or walk up and around the Avignon Cathedral.
Every July, the streets of Avignon are alive with the sights and sounds of dance, music and theatre performances throughout the city. While the festival most famously takes place in the courtyard of the Palais des Papes, it also spills out into other unsuspecting corners and crannies around the historic city. The existence of a second festival, the Off Festival , running almost concurrently with the main festival, means every park, courtyard, hall and theatre throughout the city is abuzz with excitement.
Due to the popularity of the festival, accommodation within Avignon in July is booked up fast, so get in quick if you plan on attending this artistic spectacle. Find yourself in a world of art and grandeur, where often the buildings housing the exhibits are as attractive as the works displayed within.

Pont du Gard star-5 Gordes star Roussillon star-5 1, While Provence is more a state of mind than a place — you can't actually point to Provence on a map — the hilltop village of Roussillon is exactly what visitors think of when they say they want to visit Provence.
The almost candy-like colors of the buildings come from the surrounding earth; Roussillon lies on one of the largest ocre deposits in the world and has prehistoric origins. After a stroll around the village, take the Giants' Causeway Sentier des Ocres , a cliffside trail loop that features the bright orange sands and plenty of forest to explore. Camargue star-5 Protected as a regional natural park, the expanse of wetlands, beaches, salt pans, and rice paddies is known for its herds of white Camargue horses and Camargue bulls, all tended to by localgardians cowboys.

Because of the cooler spring, we were a little early to see full blooming lavender south of Avignon, but our guide quickly shifted and gave us the option to stay on the original course and see the early blooms or head north and see full blooms.
We had the most perfect day with our tour guide, Gordana!! We opted to go north and it was spectacular!! We also visited the most beautiful little hill town of Vaison la Romaine. I would absolutely recommend this tour and more importantly, our guide who adapted to give us the best experience for us to anyone looking for a wonderful experience in Provence!
She was friendly and knowledgeable and we would have loved to have spent even more time with her!! Loved our tour guide, loved the tour. Loved St. Remy, so glad we got to see that. Really got an understanding of Avignon. So glad we did this! Loved our private tour with Gordana! She is a lovely woman with tons of information and great English! Loved the itenerary though we missed one thing due to the park being closed, she made adjustments and it worked out well.
She also made an amazing recommendation for dinner in Avignon! Super tour. It was an amazing excursion. Florence is interesting and very knowledgeable guide. My husband and I had a wonderful time in Avignon and Chateauneuf-du-Pape. He was also very helpful in giving tips about other places to visit in Avignon and the tour was very agreeable.
Our guide Julien was very helpful, nice, funny and knowledgeable of the area. He took us to the best looking lavender fields, and even made a photo stop in Gordes even though it wasn't on his list. What made this trip were the stories about previous figures and landmarks and it's a terrific way to see Avignon as it's quite small.
Our guide was exceptionally knowledgable and it's smart to skip the line. Well worth it and there's not much walking to be honest! Anais was our tour guide and driver. She did an excellent job. She communicates well in both English and French. On our trip back to Avignon, my cousins and her played a "guess who" game that keep us awake and it was fun as everyone tried to guess who it was.
We miss you, Anais! A chance to see a Provence village, take great photos, enjoy a market stop all in one day. Great scenery, great guide. Comfortable van and accommodating service in Avignon. We had a chance to visit a private field and we had entire field to just 4 persons.
The tour is wonderful. Our guide Nicolas was very knowledgable. The highlight of this tour is defintely the lavender fields. IT was perfect. There is a sophistication and splendour to the square, something reinforced by the wide range of restaurants and stylish cafes found here.
One of the best ways to enjoy the architecture, such as the 19 th -century City Hall and Opera, is over a coffee and a slice of cake. Take a lunchtime cruise along The Rhone.
Today, there are lots of ways to get out on the river. There are a handful of companies that offer lunchtime or dinner cruises along The Rhone. The lunchtime cruise is the best bet, as it will give you the opportunity to enjoy some fantastic views of the famous landmarks of Avignon. Discover Romans and Van Gogh in nearby Arles. I travelled to Southern France via train. Train tickets are available through voyages-sncf. Hi, I'm Monica! This is my family lifestyle blog where I share posts about motherhood and microadventures.

Monica Posted on July 21, May 10, Peruse Les Halles Market For an authentic and local experience, a visit to the colourful and aromatic market at Les Halles is a must.
