And in December, , when Duke again needed a football coach, Butters turned the entire program over to Spurrier. But trust me, I could not make that statement up. The man exudes confidence. If you went early to a Duke practice in , you would see the head ball coach himself, drilling quarterbacks on fundamentals of footwork and throwing motion. Senior Steve Slayden, who had done more handing off than passing in his first three years, lit up Georgia Tech for six touchdown passes.
That remains the Duke record for touchdown passes in one game. Slayden graduated following the season, turning the quarterback position over to senior Anthony Dilweg. Anthony was interested in acting as much as football. That was fine with Spurrier.
You could see he had a swagger at the line of scrimmage. That Duke team lost only three games and should have been invited to a bowl. But the season was sullied by a tie with NC State. And remember there were no overtimes then.
Spurrier was voted Coach of the Year in Dilweg was voted Player of the Year. But Duke did not receive a bowl bid. Think about this: Spurrier had Ben Bennett in his final year as offensive coordinator in ; he called plays for Steve Slayden in his first season as head coach in and Anthony Dilweg in ; then in , Spurrier broke in not just one, but two new quarterbacks!
Who says you have to have a third year starter to win games and pile up yards? Virginia whipped Duke The Cavaliers would become number in the entire country in , but in they still could not get past Clemson, losing to the Tigers for the 29th time in 29 tries. Cuthbert took a handoff with two big Clemson defenders in his path. Cuthbert willed his way into the end zone, and the spectacle of a Duke guy overpowering players from Clemson, electrified both the crowd and the Duke team. The Blue Devils threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter, and won the game Two weeks later, Clemson lost to Georgia Tech, falling out of first place.
Duke and Virginia both finished the ACC season The conference declared the Blue Devils and Cavaliers co-champions. Reaction from Charlottesville was swift. Spurrier drew an analogy between the ACC Championship debate and the sport of boxing.
Spurrier left Duke after the season-to become the head coach at Florida. Spurrier won games coaching at his Alma Mater, including a national championship. But he seems to cherish his success at Duke as much as anything else in his coaching career. Here are a few more highlights:.

Kenny Miller kicked a yard field goal. Was it a bad sign for Duke that the Tar Heels scored so early? Duke answered with a drive that reached the Carolina two-yard line. Duke took its first lead on a yard TD strike from Slayden to Hines near the midpoint of the second quarter. I had a lot of room to work with in the corner of the end zone.
Duke drove to the Carolina eight but an apparent TD pass to tight end Bud Zuberer was called back on an ineligible man downfield penalty. The penalty was on Hines who was adjudged to have lined up on the line of scrimmage, giving Duke eight linemen.
On the next play Slayden rolled out under pressure and tried to throw across his body. Duke took the second-half kickoff and marched 74 yards in eight plays. Spurrier and losing coach Dick Crum passed each other in opposite directions in this game, figuratively if not literally. Crum was fired shortly afterwards, a year after an appearance in the Aloha Bowl, six years after a season, which was preceded by an season. Crum ended up at Kent State the following season, where he went in three miserable seasons that ended his coaching career. Spurrier had told the Duke faithful before the season that anything short of a winning season was unacceptable.
