The scenery of Antarctica was truly spectacular. The challenge of the Mountain in combination with the interaction with Dave Hahn and our other team members. Again, it was much more than a trip with Dave.
The camaraderie among the team was great. Dave's stories were a highlight for sure, and I suspect you have heard that before. RMI and ALE staff professionalism and ability to go beyond their duties, made the trip an incredible adventure.

Biosecurity The Antarctic Treaty System that governs the continent dictates strict environmental protection practices and biosecurity guidelines exist for travel to Antarctica in order to prevent any alien species or diseases from accidentally being transported onto the continent. Here are some considerations when making your flight arrangements: We are traveling during the region's high season, so seats to Punta Arenas can be limited and expensive.
Some fares do not even permit you to fly stand-by. Change fees can be expensive and payment is required at the time of change. The RMI Office is available to help facilitate in re-booking the return flights if needed.
When the group leaves Union Glacier, you can call our office and we can contact your travel agent to start the process of re-booking for you. If you would like us to change your ticket, we will need all your ticket and passenger information.
If it is not a fully flexible ticket, then we will also need a credit card number and maximum amount we are allowed to charge for making the change. Luggage for Flights to Union Glacier All luggage must comply with international air transport regulations. In preparation for weighing and collection, your luggage should be separated into 4 categories: Clothing worn on flight to Antarctica: This will remain with you until your flight and should include various under-layers as well as your parka, rain pants, Antarctic boots, gloves, hat, goggles or sunglasses.
Hand Luggage: Includes items you carry aboard in a reasonable sized daypack or on your person. Hand luggage includes your passport and other items that you want to keep with you until flight day or to have handy during the flight: all medications, cameras, sunscreen, and money. You MUST have your passport in your hand luggage.
No sharp objects are allowed. Hold Luggage: Personal food, extra clothing and personal equipment for use in Antarctica, including knives and sharp objects. Hold luggage will be loaded the day prior to the flight and will remain in the hold of the plane until weather conditions permit us to fly to Union Glacier.
Please tag your bags with traveler name, program code, and RMI. You will not have access to these items before or during the flight. Since weather delays are the norm, do not put anything in your hold luggage that you might need during your stay in Punta Arenas, including medications, perishable foods, passport, credit cards or cash.
Left Luggage: City clothes and any other items you want to leave in Punta Arenas. These should be left at your hotel. Please make sure to tag all left luggage with both your name, as well as "RAAL" in case ALE needs to retrieve our luggage for us upon return from Antarctica. Please make sure you have an accurate description of the number and type of bags you have left in the hotel.
This will allow ALE to move your bags to an alternate hotel if required on your return to Punta Arenas. Do not leave valuables in your left luggage. When preparing your luggage for weighing keep in mind: Your hold luggage will be weighed and collected from you the afternoon prior to your flight and you will not see it again until you arrive at Union Glacier.
Your maximum personal baggage weight is 50 lbs. Traveler's Health Travelers may suffer from upset stomachs when in foreign countries.
Hygiene: It is important that you wash your hands thoroughly before meals and after using the restroom. If water is not available for washing, we recommend using a hand sanitizer. Water: The number one rule is: don't drink the water, and that includes shower water and ice!
Brush your teeth with purified water rather than tap water. You should check bottled water for a good seal and use a napkin to wipe excess moisture from drinking glasses. Take care with fruit juice, particularly if it has been diluted with water. Carefully clean the tops of bottled beverages before opening.
Food: If it is cooked, boiled or can be peeled, you can usually eat it. Salads and fruits should be washed with purified water or peeled where possible. Be wary of ice cream and shellfish. Always avoid any undercooked meat. Medical Emergencies Union Glacier Camp has a basic clinic where excellent care for minor illnesses and injuries is readily available. Effective high altitude mountaineering requires a good specific physiology for the activity and a solid mountaineering background. It is often unknown who will perform well up high and who will not. There have been many instances of technically brilliant mountaineers not being able to climb at altitude whilst less experienced climbers, who do operate well up high, excel. Of course, there is much we can do to enhance the attributes we have and these are best achieved by specific high altitude training.
Check out our Fitness Training page for more detailed information. Adventure Consultants are privileged to be one of the only operators permitted to leave caches of equipment at our mountain camps. This greatly reduces the need for carrying the larger loads of days gone by. Your guide will help with your equipment check in Punta Arenas, but you will need to arrive fit and ready to tackle the mountain.
Mount Vinson is situated in the heart of the Ellsworth Mountains, nautical miles from the South Pole. Both expeditions were supported by government programmes. The Canadian company Adventure Network International ANI opened up this area to private expeditions and operated regular flights to its summer camp at Patriot Hills from ALE is run by some of the same people that initially started ANI back in the s and they now use a new camp at Union Glacier as their base to operate from in Antarctica.
Under the leadership of experienced Antarctic guides, climbers of moderate experience can safely undertake the expedition. While ALE will supply our transport to and from Antarctica, Adventure Consultants will provide all the leadership, guiding staff and team equipment necessary for the expedition. AC will import western food for the expedition and supplement this with fresh and dried Chilean products. Our expeditions are renowned for the quality of the food and your guides cooking expertise will be legendary.
The group will be expected to assist with cooking tasks. Snack food for the climbing days will be sorted in Punta Arenas before you depart and you will carry that for the expedition. Other snack food will be available for days when not on the mountain.
A full clothing and equipment checklist will be sent to all expedition members once their booking is confirmed. The expedition leader will be available prior to the trip to discuss individual equipment questions. Flights to and from Antarctica are subject to weather. Delays can and often do occur therefore it is important to allow some flexibility with airline travel arrangements at the end of the expedition.
The climb involves interesting glacier travel on the wide and gently sloping lower reaches of the Branscomb Glacier. The Low Camp is situated further up the glacier just beyond the second icefall, below an ice-wall, which drops directly from the main summit which is about a 7-hour walk from Base Camp punctuated by regular breaks to take in the scenery. We carry half of our equipment in a rucksack and the other half we tow behind on a small plastic sledge.
Fixed rope techniques will be taught during the expedition. High Camp is nestled beside a rocky ridge adjacent to the main summit plateau. The climb from High Camp to the summit normally takes between 7 and 10 hours, depending on the speed of the party. On summit day as you climb the glacial plateau, you will first pass Branscomb Peak on the left and the final Vinson summit pyramid then lies directly ahead.
From here we climb the picturesque East Ridge, weaving in and out of small rock steps until we arrive at the stunningly beautiful summit and the highest point on the Antarctic continent. There is a Sierra Club book in a metal tin on the summit of the peak for those wishing to record their ascent. The descent from High Camp down to Base Camp can be achieved reasonably comfortably in one day.
We collect the toilet bags and other waste on the way down the mountain. Arrival As the group gear must be weighed and loaded at least 1 day prior to departure to Union Glacier as well as attend the expedition briefing, you are advised to schedule your arrival in Punta Arenas accordingly. Thus we recommend arriving the day before the official start date of the expedition or at the very least, arriving on the morning of Day One.

However, the 2, meter high south face has never been attempted. Mount Shinn stands tall with an elevation of 4, meters and neighbours Mount Tyree as it is located only 6km away from the second highest mountain in Antarctica.
The mountain was named after Lieutenant Commander Conrad S. Shinn, who was a U. S Navy pilot on some of the flights that first discovered the mountain and was the first to land a plane at the geographic South Pole in Mount Rutford is a jagged peak with an elevation of 4, meters, making it the highest point on the Craddock Massif. The peak was named in after Robert Huxie Rutford, who was part of J. Campbell Craddock's expedition to the Ellsworth Mountains.
It has a height of 4, meters, making it the ninth tallest mountain on the continent of Antarctica. The mountain was named after J. Campbell Craddock, who led the University of Minnesota's geological surveys of the Ellsworth Mountains.
The Sentinel Range in Antarctica is a place for daring adventurers and experienced mountaineers to conquer new goals and truly challenge themselves. The mountains in the range are by no means easy to climb or very accessible so treks need to be arranged and planned in advance with an experienced touring company.
It was the last of the Seven Summits to be successfully climbed due to its remote location. Mount Vinson offers climbers the chance to see and experience the barren, icy wilderness of the Antarctica.
Mount Vinson is rated as a moderately difficult climb, although it does not require much technical skill. The climb usually takes between 16 days and 3 weeks to complete since extra days should always be accounted for in case bad weather conditions suddenly arise.
