They were only visible either during extreme closeups or when he's about to cry before. Now that all the characters around him have distinctive eye colors I guess the artists are correcting a design oversight. Yeah Ash has always had brown eyes, but they weren't that noticeable before.

He has seemingly undeveloped in terms of maturity probably intended to keep up with a younger generation , and he appears to have gotten shorter than in the previous season, as well as loosing the leaner physique.
Even facially he looks much younger. Maybe it's the squiggly lines under his eyes? I do still enjoy the show, but it felt like Ash's character was developing slowly into adulthood and now they've pushed a big reset button on him. I have to be honest tho. But after watching the Anime I kinda like Ash being the way he is.
I got used to how his character looks now. Even now I am still as childish as ever :joy:. The original eyes. Firstly, because they were more unusual. There are loads of anime characters with the big later style eyes. The older eyes stood out for that alone.
Secondly, I liked they were subtly coloured: you didn't notice they were brown until you looked carfully. It just made things a little more fun. Plus his facial expression with blacker eyes look better than his facial expression with browner eyes.
